If you could erase five characters from any fandom, who would you choose?

1. Ty Lee. Seriously, what exactly did she contribute to the show? I dislike comic relief characters, and they could have easily written around Mai's Heel Face Turn without Ty Lee involved.
2. Data. Even as a kid, I always pretty much rolled my eyes all through the episodes that surrounded this character. Actually, I think "Data's Day" is the only TNG ep I never watched all the way through... and that's saying a lot, considering how hard core of a TNG geek I was when I was a kid. I'd even skip the books with him as a main character. He's just... annoying. I always felt that he had 35 years or so of contact with humanity before joining the Enterprise and so there was no excuse for him acting the way he did. He was comic relief that fell flat for me. Sorry. I thought the show would have been even (more) awesome with him written out.
3. Sasuke. Think about this... No Sasuke in team Kakashi... no ultra ridiculously powerful Uchiha clan. (Kakashi could have gotten his eye from someone else.) Instead, they put in Shikamaru. HOLY CRAP. Naruto would still have someone to challenge him, because Shika is waaaay too lazy to take anything seriously, but he's a genius (and that would just piss Naruto off, and he'd work extra hard to show him up). You have Naruto's brawn, Shikamaru's brains and... whatever the hell Sakura does. It would be epic.
4. Lana Lane. Her continued presence was pretty much the reason I stopped watching Smallville. She went beyond Mary-Sue into some sort of writer's darling. God, she sucks.
5. Vala from SG1. Now granted I only saw the later episodes sparingly, but she was uninteresting in every one of them. Why was she there again?

If you could beef up the role of five characters from any fandom, who would you choose?
  1. Ax from The Animorphs. He always seemed to have one of the most compelling stories to me. Forget Cassie and her crises on if suppressing animal instincts made them like Yeerks... Ax lived always in his brother's shadow, is stranded on a alien planet,in a war that's going badly, and he has Marco as a roommate.
    .
  2. The Dragons from Dragonriders of Pern. Seriously, I know they were animals and didn't often add unsolicited advice, but sometimes in the later books I didn't feel their presence at all. Or the ones by Todd McCaffrey the dragonless riders pretty much got over losing their dragon in a snap. Lame.
  3. This will surprise, like, no one, but I thought Zuko should have joined the cast earlier in season 3. It was pretty obvious he was unhappy from the start and a lot of season 3 were the Gaang goofing around stealing money, saving factories and dancing in school. Also lame. He could have been in eariler and we could have seen more dork!Zuko. Plus, it might have done him some good to get to know his own country a little from a peasant's POV.
  4. More Draco Malfoy please. I don't want the Draco in Leather Pants Draco, either. I want screwed up, racist little shit Draco in book 7, trying to save his mom and dad from Voldermort and hating every minute of it because he has to be around the Mudblood, the Chosen One and the Blood Traitor. That's what I wanted.
  5. I had another answer in here, but I just changed it (haha, I can do that). Other than Shikamaru I would like to see more Iruka. I swear that guy has more going for him than just simple academy teacher. He's a hidden badass, I know it.

3. This. Sasuke (played by my favorite VA, sniffle) just annoys the heck out of me. I just wanted him to suffer and he's just such a male author insert. He's supposed to be pitiable but after a while, I just give up on him.

4. Yes. Yes. Yes. She killed Smallville.

1. YES!
3. This is why you are genius.
4. Keep on reading my mind.
5. Yes!

Lol. I'm so glad we agree on so many points. Sasuke... there's nothing redeemable in him anymore. I gave up the moment he turned against his village after finally killing his brother. Just -- UGH. He is the Lana Lane of Naruto.

Ax! OMG, I love you so damn much right now!

I like Ty Lee, though. There's a fair bit of character there, if you look.

Still, Ax!

I like Ty Lee too, mostly because of her saving Mai during the "Boiling Rock" Episode. I think she at least contributed a little to the plot :) But that's just me.

I liked Ty Lee, I just wish they would have made her Zuko's lost love! It would have been hilarious!

Ax is the MAN!!!! :D

I just never really connected with Ty Lee. Probably because I've never written her. Sometimes it's really hard to hate the characters you write.
Monday, October 19th, 2009 04:40 am (UTC)
It's true, I do write her a lot. Well, for me. :P
Sunday, October 18th, 2009 02:57 am (UTC)
Oh. Hai. There are several reasons why we are friends. 1, 4, 1, 3, and 5 are five of those reasons. Yes. [Esp. more Draco and Axe.] And Lana can suck it.
Monday, October 19th, 2009 04:35 am (UTC)
Haha! I'm glad we agree on so many points. Moar Draco and Ax please!!!!

1. See, I feel as though Ty Lee deserved the Heel-Face-Turn more than Mai because of the circus incident when she was first introduced.

3. There is a really epic fanfic out there where team 7 is Shikamaru, Naruto, and Hinata (Team Loser). They are the three 'dead-lasts' of the class and Kakashi is their sensei. Asuma leads Sasuke, Ino, and Shino (Team Awesome), and Ino and Sasuke become awesome rivals because Ino is aggressive and can't stand his emo-ness for too long, while Shino subtly beats them both. Kunerai leads Chouji, Sakura, and Kiba (Team Average), and they don't do much. It's epic, but hasn't been updated in a while and that makes me sad.

3 (again). Yes. Season 3 would have been several thousands times more epic if Zuko had just joined earlier. It's like they were waiting for Day of Black Sun for Zuko to change sides, and everything before that was just pointless filler because of that decision.

What's that fic in 3 called?
Monday, October 19th, 2009 04:36 am (UTC)
I second the request for the fic? I don't even care if it hasn't been updated. I'd still read it! You have a point about Ty Lee. She never really did get any retribution for that circus incident until the Boiling Rock ep, did she?

You...you....you're an Animorphs fan?!

Oh wow. You're awesome.

And yes, you're right. Ax's story is sorely in need of more detail. Damn.
Monday, October 19th, 2009 04:36 am (UTC)
Haha! Yes Animorphs was, like, my first fanfiction writing experience way back when. It's so cool to meet old fans of that series! :D
Monday, October 19th, 2009 01:00 pm (UTC)
True story: Animorphs was my first fanfiction fandom, too, although I do confess that it was pure self-insert Mary-Sue-ing (Hey, I was 12 and stupid =D).

It's so hard to find the books. I have half of the series missing. Argh.

2,3,4,5,1,2,5, I didn't watched those shows or I really dont remember them heh ...
But I think you are totally right about Zuko and Draco, oh God knows how much I wanted that in the next book Draco changes sides when 7 arrived I though, well now the guy has to do something to save himself and his family but no, JK made him go on with all the Im a complete jackass the chosen one ¬¬' I mean she made him a complete coward in the last chapters, I hated that...
And dont make me start with Zuko, I almost cried with the last chapter of Book 2 but then I saw Book 3 and understood, he had to see all the bad things his family was doing and hit his head against the wall so to finally understand but it would have been completely marvelous if he got to see how tattered up his nation was because or war it would have taught him sooooo much more but nop they just kept on stretching the moment of side changing TT_TT
You dont like Ty Lee?? oh thats bad, I like, yes total minor character but Im a little into comic relief characters and I totally love the idea of turning those into really complexed characters
Monday, October 19th, 2009 04:39 am (UTC)
Yeah I think that they played their hand a little too much with the whole 'Zuko changing sides' thing. I mean, maybe four or five episodes of angsting MAX, but around 13? No thanks. And Draco... of course I can't argue with the way JK presented her characters because they were HER CHARACTERS, but I really felt that Draco dropped off the surface of the Earth. Harry and Co just spent months wondering around camping and I felt there was really a missed opportunity there.

Agreed on Sasuke. Naruto would have been so much better without the little twat of a Stu. Shikamaru for Team Seven! *holds up sign*

And also agreed on Ax. Holy fuck, I didn't realize you were an Animorphs fan :D That just made my weekend.
Monday, October 19th, 2009 04:39 am (UTC)
LOL! Oh yeah, Animorphs actually introduced me to fanfiction... and it all went downhill from there. :D
Sunday, October 18th, 2009 03:21 pm (UTC)
Yes yes YES to the racist-little-shit Draco. I've always felt that he was fading in the background, and I really wanted to see more of his character ;;
Monday, October 19th, 2009 04:41 am (UTC)
I totally did. I don't care if he was completely horrible... at least he would do SOMETHING. I felt that he could have either been a lesson learned or maybe (just maybe) dragged to the good side OR SOMETHING. Gah. It just felt like a missed opportunity to me.

I agree with Zuko should have joined the gaang earlier, except that I think it was absolutely perfect how and when he finally did -- on his own terms, after his own realizations. I think that's one of the most powerful parts of the show, that there are all these times when he could have turned-heel almost by accident, but instead it ended up being a deliberate, difficult decision.

But yes, six episodes of dork!Zuko isn't nearly enough. I think I wish that Black Sun had come at like episode 5 of season 3. The whole wandering around the fire nation was sort of pointless, even if it gave us painted lady and bloodbending -- but those would have been much cooler if Zuko was somehow there.

So yes. Agreed.

Also, omg, Naruto without Sasuke. Naruto vs Shikamaru. OMG. That would be so much more awesome.
Monday, October 19th, 2009 04:43 am (UTC)
I agree with you. Black Sun could have been moved up, I think and the other episodes might have been a tad less... fillerish. Too bad I'm only a fanbrat. *sighs*

I really like Shikamaru as a character, and Naruto too. But if it came down to it, I could just read a whole spin off manga just with Shika as the main character. Haha.
Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 01:49 am (UTC)
I didn't really like Shikamaru much (Shikamaru vs Temari chunin test excepted) until the post-Asuma arc. And then, I cried, and ever since Shikamaru set the exploding tags off, he has been the best character ever. In Naruto, at least.

And of course, we've seen him in like four frames since. Bah.
Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 03:32 am (UTC)
... Sasuke used to be my favorite character ):
... he probably still is... or would be, if Kishimoto had not handled the story in the worst way possible D:

AND OMG YES MORE DRACO!! OR NO DRACO, I WANT MALFOYS!!! I LOVE THEM!!! THEY ARE SUCH HORRIBLE PEOPLE <3
