Because a large part of my paycheck is commission based, my income has taken a swan dive in the last year due to the recession. I didn't know it was this bad, though. I just got this letter from my company.


Dear Employee:

Based on your annual earnings, you may be eligible to receive the Earned Income Tax Credit from the federal government.... The Earned Income Tax Credit is a refundable federal income tax credit for low-income working individuals and families. The Earned income Tax Credit has no effect on certain welfare benefits. In most cases, Earned Income Tax Credit payments will not be used to determine eligibility for Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, food stamps, low income housing, or most temporary assistance for needy families payments....

I'm not sure from this post if you're just lamenting that your income has gone down or if there's something about the highlighted words that bothers you?

Oh it just makes me roll my eyes that my company is all like, "Yeah we pay you so little nowadays that you might need these services." *Helpfully highlighted for my convenience*

On one hand it's like, yeah, they're trying to help. On the other... I guess a part of me resents being reminded I'm an inch above the poverty line when two years ago I was making more than both my parents.

It brought out some complicated feelings of pride and resentment.

That is kind of odd that your job would point that out. I got EIC one year... but I was salaried and it was just because my husband was staying home to take care of our baby .

It might be one of those random form things that they're required to send out to every employee, but... well, I'll find out if I'm qualified or not with my Turbo Tax. I haven't had to do it in the past, but more taxes back is always worth it!
