All right, guys.

I have the house all to myself tonight, a refillable glass of alcoholic eggnog to one side, a snoring mastiff at my feet, and a plot bunny with no feasible plot. It's meme time!!!!

The Universe:
  • Sokka was born female.
  • She is still not a bender.
  • Her name is still Sokka. (I blame Hakoda and Kya for that one.)
  • .... That's pretty much it.

The Rules:

1)  Up to 4 prompts per participant, unless I reply and say you can add more.

2)  Prompts can range from fluffy to dark. (Example Prompt: Girl!Sokka loves braiding Katara's hair. Sister bonding time!) Or (Example Prompt: Hahn knows Yue is fickle and sets his eyes to another Water Tribe princess just in case...  )

3)  Prompts can also range from serious to wacky. (Example Prompt: Hakoda dearly wanted his first born to be a boy.) or (Example Prompt Long Feng kidnaps Girl!Sokka and it's up to Prince Zuko to rescue his beloved! Lol)

4)  I'll keep writing until I either pass out tonight, or puke eggnog out my nose. (There's a Merry Christmas image for you.)

Let's see how different (or not) having girl Sokka would change things. :D
Go go go go go!!!

Girl!Sokka enters puberty and frightens her little sister with evil tales of menstrual cycles and bouncing chest tissue and EW BODY HAIR.

Girl!Sokka has always been the big sister, the tribe's strongest young hope, organizer of the child army, Aang's go-to gal, etc. She's used to being the boss of the group (even if it's just in her head), so when they are first welcomed into the Northern Water Tribe, she can't believe how the men here treat them - they won't deign to look at her, her jokes are ignored or sniffed at. She isn't even allowed into the armory to help with the strategy against Zhao - and let's be honest, she knows way more about the guy than they do.

Girl!Sokka helps deliver the baby after the Serpent's Pass.

bonus round: Girl!Sokka has never been comfortable as, well, girl!Sokka. She kind of feels more like a dude. She kind of wants other people to see her that way. TRANSGENDER GENDERBENDED NONBENDER SAY WHAT

The second prompt was too grand in scope for me to get it in one drabble (as much as I would have loved), but I like the idea of her being in the NWT.

This is based during Yue's Birthday celebration, just as they arrive.

"... So then the duck-walrus says, "That's not a fish, and I am happy to see you!" Sokka concluded with a flourish and laughed hard, pounding upon the feasting table twice with the flat of one hand.

It took her a few seconds to realize that she was the only one laughing. "It wasn't a fish," she repeated, looking around the table for a spark of recognition in anyone's eyes. Not even Chief Arnook cracked a smile. "Get it?"

Someone, a minister of something-something (Honestly, Sokka didn't really care. Show her to the guy in charge of the sharp and pointy weapons. That was her thing. Aang could be in charge of the diplomatic stuff.) coughed briefly into his hand and directed the conversation pointedly over Sokka's head, to another stiff looking man sitting upon the opposite end of the table.

Sokka sighed. Great. It didn't look like anyone got her sense of humor on this side of the planet either.

Princess Yue, to her side, had flushed pink (perhaps she had gotten the joke after all) and politely asked, "So... I understand your trip to our land was eventful?"

"You have no idea," she answered, thinking once again of that crazy Fire Nation prince who had chased them nearly the entire way. She thought of him a lot, it seemed. Who the heck had yellow as a natural eye-color, anyway? No wonder the Fire Nation was all insane.

Yue's mouth twitched upward in a polite, if bland smile, and Sokka sighed again, forcefully pulling her attention to the present. She reached across the table and snagged a delicious-looking roll, chewing as she spoke. "So... how do you get your hair like that?"

The other girl blinked, her hand raising to touch her hair. "You mean the color? It's... a long story."

"No," Sokka waved her hand vaguely above Yue and then with another flick, gestured to her own lank, brown hair. "How do you keep it up in a style like that? Mine never does it what I want to do. She stopped wearing hair loopies years ago, when Katara started copying it and settled for pulling it back into a simple high pony-tail and braid. Unbound, it fell nearly to her waist, but mostly it just got in a way.

"Oh." Yue's surprised look softened, and for the first time she seemed to be enjoying herself. Sad. It was supposed to be her birthday party. "I have this woman who works for us... she styles hair for all the high familes. She's an artist." Yue paused, glanced again at Sokka's neat braid then added, "I could... introduce you?"

She grinned, knowing it was past time for a change. Ideally, she'd like something utilitarian, for all the ass-kicking she had to do to keep her little sister and Aang out of trouble, but... nice. You know, just in case. "I'd like that."

Yue smiled back and for the first time, Sokka couldn't help but wonder if maybe she could find a friend in this wild trek with the Avatar, too.

I second moldycookies' motion! AWESOME. Sokka is so in-character, and yet still a woman... I can definitely see her getting annoyed REALLY fast by gender norms in the North. I really like how she and Yue bonded, too - over not the weirdness of Yue's hair, but the difficulties of dealing with long hair like they both have. :) Nice.

Thank you! :D (I know I said prompts are closed, but I'm a lying liar and you're totally welcome to throw in some prompts if you have any. ;D )

Ooh, for serious?

I think I'm going to be greedy and ask for more Sokka at the Northern Water Tribe. For instance, I'm going to assume that Sokka is WAY more supportive of Katara defying Pakku and his attitude this time around.

I've also always thought that many of the people in the Northern Water Tribe have, in becoming more "civilized", gotten away from the practical skills of survival that permeate Southern Water Tribe culture - you need badass warrior women to fight off the Fire Nation. You can't be picky and choosey about gender if you only have a handful of warriors in the first place. Therefore, female!Sokka in warpaint during the battle against the Fire Nation at the NWT, defying all expectations of not only her gender but the awesomeness of SWT warriors? (Hey, she may not have MUCH training, but she'd determined, and her father felt comfortable enough in her skills to leave Sokka in charge of the entire tribe when he and the men left?)

Very neat. There's definitely more of a girl vibe in Sokka's dialogue. (I see your Zuko/Sokka shipping too hahahaha) and it's very cute that she stopped wearing her hair in loopies after Katara started copying it. Yue and Sokka bonding just as girlpals is just as adorable as boy!Sokka's hormones going wild. Thanks for the fun read!

Gendar roles at the South Pole: Does Sokka get to slack off chores and train the warriors as a girl?

Sokka's dirty socks and funky smelling sleeping bag.

Sokka is the older sister. She's supposed to teach Katara all about creeps like Jet, but Katara just won't listen.

Sokka falls into the Haiku girls' class
Saturday, December 11th, 2010 04:42 am (UTC)
Sokka was seriously getting ready to tear her hair out. Or better yet, her sister's. Would she really miss one hair loopie? "Katara, will you -- Katara just listen to me!" She grabbed for her sister's elbow and missed. "Jet's a creep!"

"Why?" Katara shot back, "Because he might be interested in me?"

Yes. The guy had to be at least seventeen and let's face it, he didn't even glance at Sokka. Either he liked 'em young, or he was interested in something else. "Of course not!" she said, wounded. "It's because he oozes creep-o vibes."

Katara wasn't listening -- she was still walking away, stiff legged and angry.

"Katara," Sokka tried again, but his sister whirled around.

"... Excuse me?"

"She's a girl in Jet's gaang. Jet told me about her -- he said you two would have a lot in common."

"I don't---" she began, then paused. "Wait... why?"

Katara shrugged, but it was a bit too casual. "She's a warrior, too. Maybe you could learn to fight a little from her."

"I already know how to fight!" Although her slightly burned tunic spoke otherwise. Sokka narrowed her eyes at her younger sister. If she wanted to be honest with herself, she knew the argument was lost as soon as it started. Katara just had that look on her face. "Just do me a favor: don't let yourself be in a room alone with him."

(Sigh. I might do this one again. I'm not getting the Sokka-is-female vibe from this. I may try again.)

Saturday, December 11th, 2010 04:56 am (UTC)
Hey, I like it, though I can see what you mean.

"Why?" Katara shot back, "Because he might be interested in me?" Oh that hint of little sister jealousy.

"Just do me a favor: don't let yourself be in a room alone with him." I don't care what anyone else says, Sokka, your instincts are boss.

As for Smellerbee, oh Jet, you sneaky, trying to distract Sokka like that. It won't work.

girl!Sokka is a lesbian and/or gets hit on by Ty Lee even though she's not interested.

Aang has a crush on girl!Sokka, not Katara.

Not happy-fun times for the trio, methinks.

"Hey Sokka."

Sokka squinted one eye open and noted the bald silhouette above her, blocking her sun. She sighed and stretched, moving her head more to the side so that her eyes fell in the shadow and she could better see. Aang had that goofy grin on his face and Sokka's stomach clenched.

"Hey Aang," she said, "How's the magic water training going?"

"Fine," he chirped. "Me and Katara are taking a break. Do you wanna see what I learned?"

"Uh..." Sokka cast across the river. Katara had her back to them both – she was still practicing even though Aang was not, and her pointedly angry water whip-crack echoed up and down the river canyon.

Sokka could read between the lines, even if Aang in all of his naivety, couldn't. This was going beyond weird and getting well into awkward territory. "No thanks, Aang," Sokka said, and tried not to wince as her friend's face fell. Seriously, it was like kicking a arctic-seal puppy. "I'm sure Katara would be interested, though." She pitched her voice unusually high, hoping it would carry over the water – hoping Katara would hear and believe her when Sokka told her she was Not Interested.

"Oh." Aang remained down for a total of three whole seconds before, "Well, I was thinking. There's some pretty flowers that grow around here. Maybe we could—"

"Maybe later." Sokka sat up, and then on second thought, hurriedly pulled her tunic back on. She had her under wrappings to cover her breasts, but considering the situation... "I'm going to go throw my boomerang around. Alone," she added pointedly, when Aang opened his mouth again. "Why don't you.... go practice more with Katara?"

Aang's face fell again and this time Sokka did wince. "I'm too old for you, buddy," she said softly, thinking she might as well step down on the puppy while he was kicking it.

"I'm one-hundred and twelve years old."

"Then you're too old for me!"

There was no doubt about it. Aang looked hurt. Sokka pulled on the rest of her tunic and buckled it tightly against her waist. "I'm going," she said, "to kill something juicy and meaty. Don't wait up."

And she left, noting the way both Katara and Aang's followed her – angry and sad.
Saturday, December 11th, 2010 08:50 pm (UTC)
This one is my favorite, thus far. It's cute how Katara is the one more interested in Aang, now that she doesn't have his constant attention. And girl!Sokka is in perfect sibling mode, trying to "fix" things.
Saturday, December 11th, 2010 03:46 am (UTC)
I suck at this prompt shit but I see Sokka as very much *not* the hair braiding type of girl.

There's only one episode I can think of where it matters to the plot that Sokka is a boy and that would be during the Warriors of Kyoshi when he learns not to be a sexist dick. What lesson do the Warriors have to teach her instead?

The ride in the war balloon to Boiling Rock has a very different sort of bonding moment.

Also, spiked egg nog is not an efficient way to get drunk. Unless you work on the proportions....
Saturday, December 11th, 2010 03:50 am (UTC)
Sokka and Suki, on Kiyoshi. So many possibilities.

Sokka and Zuko and the Boiling Rock. Specifically, when they are changing into their stolen guard uniforms. Girl!Sokka boob hijinks.

Sokka and Zuko and the Boiling Rock and that cable car and all the hand-holding.

Aang as the man of the gAang. However that goes. Bonus if it's Aang realizing that now Zuko is a man of the gAang, and Aang doesn't know if he feels threatened.
Saturday, December 11th, 2010 03:51 am (UTC)
Aswome idea!
girl Sokka and Katara find Aang. Is Katara still the one Aang falls head over heals for?

girl Sokka and the Kyoshi Warriors, what dose he think of Suki now?

girl Sokka and Zuko, how do they interact at the Western Air Temple?

girl Sokka and Toph, earthbending
Saturday, December 11th, 2010 04:34 am (UTC)
Lol, Toph still has a crush on Sokka. XD

Saturday, December 11th, 2010 04:08 am (UTC)
1. Suki reunites with girl!Sokka at Full Moon Bay and reflects on how ripped/warrior-ish her friend's become in the interim.

2. A f**king scary Mama Bear Wolf girl!Sokka comes to Toph's defense.

3. girl!Sokka really, really tries to be happy for her Gran Gran after learning of Pakku's marriage to her.

4. Piandao and girl!Sokka talk about the distinct lack of female "old masters" at the White Lotus camp outside of Ba Sing Se.
Saturday, December 11th, 2010 04:16 am (UTC)
This meme inspired me to dust off an unused prologue to a Sokka genderswap that ended up as deadfic and re-work it as a one-shot.
Saturday, December 11th, 2010 04:38 am (UTC)
Girl!Sokka get her period. That's always fun. It's even funner (YES, IT IS A WORD, BITCH) when she tries to scared Katara into thinking that she's dying.

Girl!Sokka meets Boy!Suki. Bwahahahahaha >8D The Kyoshi Warriors make sense to the Water Tribe and the rest of the world really doesn't care.

Yue is a lesbian.

How comebacks does it take to make Aang snap out of jealously? :D (Zutara, anyone? :D)
Saturday, December 11th, 2010 06:50 am (UTC)
It would be awesome if boy!Suki still dresses and behaves as a woman out of dedication to the ideal of Avatar Kioshi and seriously believes in female equality-- or supremacy. For a female Sokka that grew up idealizing all the absent male warriors of her tribe, that might be a really interesting culture shock.
Saturday, December 11th, 2010 04:38 am (UTC)
Sokka and Katara, I want to see a good ol' fashioned sisterly cat fight OR a three-way Sokka/Katara/Toph throwdown. Epic.

Does Sokka have trouble getting Piandao to teach her? Is there some extra Sokka-style convincing required? (Bonus points for a sneaky plan that backfires utterly. ;p)

If Sokka's the older sister, doesn't that mean she got their mother's betrothal necklace? aka Sokka gets tied to a tree by an angry Fire Nation prince and menaced by pirates.

Sokka and Aunt Wu. What's in Sokka's future and what does she think of her supposed fortune?
Saturday, December 11th, 2010 06:54 am (UTC)
Girl!Sokka returns to her tribe after Season 3, and finds herself stuck between the warriors that expect to be waited on hand and foot and the women that have done just fine without them for the last sevenish years. Obviously both sides expect her to back them up!
Saturday, December 11th, 2010 06:56 am (UTC)
Girl!Sokka in your In His Shoes universe when he'sshe's in Zuko's body going WTF? at being a guy. XD

Saturday, December 11th, 2010 05:10 pm (UTC)
That was my thought exactly when I got home from work! I curse myself for doing RL stuff! ;P
Saturday, December 11th, 2010 05:55 pm (UTC)
That's exactly what I thought, too!

Fortunately, Zuko provides perfect icons for this kind of situation.
Saturday, December 11th, 2010 11:03 pm (UTC)
My resolve. It is paper-thin.

You can go ahead and put in some prompts if you want. ;D
Sunday, December 12th, 2010 12:26 am (UTC)
Hooray, genderbending Avatar ficlets for the win. :) Maybe one of these will strike your fancy.

I really want to see girl!Sokka meeting the Kyoshi Warriors for the first time - how do they get along if Sokka isn't all "I am a man and my manly warrior skills are totally better than your silly fans!"? Does Sokka still manage to piss Suki off and get her ass handed to her?

Or - girl!Sokka meets Madam Wu: does she still get told that her future "is full of struggle and anguish, most of it self-inflicted."?

Or - What happens when girl!Sokka falls in the window at the poetry class in Ba Singh Se?

Or - Sokka is the one who gets tied to the tree by Zuko! Does Sokka have anything Zuko can take as a token? (Who has their mom's necklace, anyway?)
Sunday, December 12th, 2010 05:37 am (UTC)
- hahaha, ohmigosh, I would DIE if that happened. Do it! Do it that way! Make Sokka go "I am freaking - OW, BITCH, YOUBROKEANAIL!" at the Kyoshi warriors.
- Yeeeeeeeeeesssssiirrr. And that she will marry a powerful bender; do it so Katara could be like "I got that one, too..." and then Aang could come in and a be like "Sokka! Look at meeee~!" and that's when she blanches. O_o
- hahahahaha! lol.
- BOOMERANG! Lol, Souko! Soko Suko? zukka? eh, I dunno.
Saturday, December 11th, 2010 11:02 pm (UTC)
Oh heck, you can go ahead and submit some prompts if you want. :D
Sunday, December 12th, 2010 05:01 pm (UTC)
Sokka's thoughts on Zuko, from first glance, first fight, and first conversation - and following: Does she see him as a challenge, a rival, or an interest? When he joins the group, is it Sokka that voices the most protest?

If Sokka is seen as a warrior of the Southern Water Tribe, does this mean that the warriors of the South are all women, and those left behind are the men? Or are things more equally-shared, instead of gender-split?
Saturday, December 11th, 2010 10:31 pm (UTC)
What if Sokka, while still female, dresses and acts like a man feeling as the oldest and most capable, that she has to be both mother and father, and subconscious wishes she was born male to uphold tribe standards as the oldest of the Chief.

Still straight but feels being female slots her into a role that conflicts with her personalty and goals she sets for herself, and when she get to the norther water tribe shows those 'warriors' what for.
Sunday, December 12th, 2010 05:32 am (UTC)
Ohmigosh, I totally read a Haku fic (from Naruto) THAT WAS EXACTLY LIKE THAT. Like, how Haku was a girl in this fic and that she wanted to be male so she would be taken seriously as a shinobi and stuff and eventually she wear boy clothes and stops her period and other... stuff...
Sunday, December 12th, 2010 01:00 pm (UTC)
Never saw that fic, but i don't hang around the Haku section of the Naruto verse that much.
Sunday, December 12th, 2010 02:55 pm (UTC)
No, I know! (well, I don't know, but for the sake of the argument, I KNOW) But it was just weird how I was literally JUST READING IT five seconds ago and then this came up. Creepy.
Tuesday, February 1st, 2011 01:38 am (UTC)
Do you mind if I steal your example prompt? "Hakoda dearly wanted his first born to be a boy."
Tuesday, February 1st, 2011 11:31 pm (UTC)
I meant as a prompt for me to write, of course. I just realized how unclear the last post was. I'll credit you for the prompt too.
Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011 01:06 am (UTC)
Oh, go right ahead! Sorry it took a few hours. I don't mind at all, and I'd love to see it when it's written. :)
Thursday, February 3rd, 2011 01:54 am (UTC)
Thanks. I'll let you know when it's finished. I'm not sure that it will be long though.
Saturday, February 5th, 2011 05:18 pm (UTC)
Finished. It's short, but hey, I think it works better that way.
