I plan on doing these about once a month or two (more, if updates become more frequent).

All of my new recommended fic can now be found on my Tumblr account. As always, I take any pairing, genre, rating, or (new!) fandom. The only thing I ask is that the fic be completed and not a work in progress. I have received quite a few recommendations so far, and am working my way through them. But I would love even more!

Akallabêth by Mirabella (Inception) :

This is one of those fics which really sticks with you. It’s not as utterly heart-wrenching as Atiaran’s ATLA fic When All Your Dreams Come True, but it’s close.

Anyone can write a tragedy, but what really got me about this fic was how realistic and human everyone’s reactions were when the twist was revealed towards the end. I found myself impressed, and drawn back for a few rereads even though it always makes me sniffle. Poor Arthur. Poor Eames. Poor Cobb. Poor… everyone.

From The Ashes by [livejournal.com profile] overlithe  (Avatar: The Last Airbender):

Incredible and frustrating all at the same time, this is a short-fic (490 words) that you wish wasn’t so short. I can’t say too much without giving it away, but Overlithe’s word choices and prose always paint a vivid and exciting picture. I can recommend many works from her, but this is one of my favorites.

Spirit of Winter by [livejournal.com profile] sharkflip (Avatar: The Last Airbender):

I can honestly say, going in, that I knew nothing of Finland’s Winter War against the USSR. I never once felt lost  — Sharkflip is the queen of historical AU’s and has a deft hand at explaining what is going on without talking down to the reader.

The excerpt I picked is a little dramatic, but the pairing between Katara/Zuko/Jet is handled very well, with a lovely sense of balance so that I wasn’t rooting for one pairing or another, but them all at the same time.

Modern AU’s AND OT3’s are hard to do well all on their own. This fic achieves both, and makes it look easy.

The House That Cobb Built
by Eleveninches (Inception) :

It’s apparent from the first few sentences that the author, Eleveninches, has an eye for the absurd. In this fic, it really shines through. This is a humorous action/adventure story with just a dash of romance.

I laughed, and I was utterly charmed by the interlude with Arthur and the kids (excerpt below), and then I was impressed by the quality and pacing of the action scenes.

Definitely a recommended fic.

Twitter Enterprise by [livejournal.com profile] misfit_fandoms (Star Trek):

This is the kind of original, imaginative stuff that makes me fall in love with fandom all over again. I don’t even hang out in the Star Trek Reboot comms, but I still enjoyed myself.

As the summary says, this is a story on the day of the Enterprise told entirely through twitter. The fun really begins when Kirk accidentally insults a Tellarite, the ship is attacked, and all hell breaks loose.

Don’t do what I did and try to read it the first time from the top, down. This is structured just like Twitter with the most recent comments appearing first. The handy link at the beginning of the post will get you where you need to be.

If you're looking for more NuTrek fics, you could do worse than Miss Porcupine's catalogue: http://miss-porcupine.livejournal.com/tag/trek%20fic

I'd recommend all the Trek fics she's done.

Thank you!!!!

I'm trying not to get pulled into the Star Trek fandom, but it's reeling me on in...

If you want another fandom to avoid getting sucked into, try Iron Man. It's fairly small but has some quality fic. If you've watched the first Iron Man movie, you'll be gold for understanding things.

title: Almost No One Makes It Out by atra
fandom: Iron Man (movieverse)
rating: R (for language)
characters: Tony Stark, Pepper Potts. Jim Rhodes.
summary: What would have happened if Tony hadn't been born filthy rich? A military AU.
length: ~28,000 words

This fic will knock you on your ass. The character voices are spot-on and it solidly delivers on the premise of its AU.

I have no idea if you've run across this before, or even if you do superheroes, but this fic is worth it even if every single minor character leaves you puzzled:

Spoilerific reason to read this fic: it's an in-character depiction of what happens when Batman introduces the newest metahuman recruit to the Justice League. It's also what happens when Batman is the only man in the room to NOT realize that the woman is a porn star.

It's a crack premise, but the author does such a kick-ass job of making the character feel completely natural in every situation that she creates. There are plenty of in-jokes for the comics nerds, but the main characters pulled into the story are very, very famous. Superman and Batman and Wonder Woman are the principal heroes involved. Past that, the main character is extremely likable and perfectly capable of holding together "a porn star joins the Justice League."

Then, if you want something on the complete other end of the spectrum, copperbadge has several long and fun Harry Potter stories, an entire zoo of other fandoms and ideas and story snippets, and then this:

Remus Lupin sets himself up as a Godfather in the mafia sense. It's a certified guilty pleasure featuring (very minor spoilers) bookie!Hermione, card-shark!Ron, and mirrored-RayBans-and-sawed-off-shotgun-destroyer-of-basilisks!Harry.
